Step out Sheffield

Ecclesall Woods Health Walk

Tuesday 10.30 meeting at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet Visitor Centre, Abbeydale Road  South.

Health Walks have been running in Ecclesall Woods on a weekly basis since January 2004. A number of different routes are deployed occasionally including one through Hutcliffe Woods (pictures above in May when the bluebells are out) and back through Millhouses Park (pictured below in December when the sun was out!)

We meet in the recently-built learning centre at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, and return there after the walk to socialise. The café is conveniently situated for those who want to stay on for lunch!

The experienced leaders on this walk have developed a neat way to get everyone to the woods across the busy Abbeydale Road. Once in the woods is a choice of walk. There's a steady and flattish walk of 20-40 minutes and a longer, brisker, walk of approximately an hour. Once in the woods walkers begin to spread out as they settle to walk at a pace that’s comfortable to them, so after only a short while it can often seem that you are walking with just the few people in your immediate area. If the chatter isn’t too loud it is possible to enjoy the birds singing and the woodpeckers hammering. In spring the woods are quite spectacular with their carpet of bluebells and in autumn, when the leaves start to turn, the trees themselves look stunning. We are so lucky in Sheffield to have such a large tract of ancient woodland so close to the city centre.

Unfortunately, because of the bumpy nature of the access paths this walk is unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Buses: No 97, 98 and 218. Alight at the stop after the Beauchief Hotel (left hand side travelling from Sheffield centre) or the Sherwood Glen stop (travelling towards town).
